Accessibility

The Identity and Passport Service (IPS) site is designed to be inclusive and to provide access to all users, regardless of technological or physical disability.

Pages have been designed to make information accessible to all users, including users with disabilities.

All templates have been Bobby-approved to priority 2 (AA) and all warnings identified by Bobby have been manually checked.

The key issues we have addressed to ensure accessibility are as follows:

Access keys and how to use them

The UK Government Access Keys Standard has been applied to this site. It offers a keyboard shortcut for users who want to go directly to specific parts of the site, and helps those who do not use a pointing device, such as a mouse.

A subset of the standard has been used and the access keys are as follows:

S - Skip navigation
1 - Home page
2 - What's new
3 - Site map
5 - FAQs & myths (FAQ)
8 - Terms and conditions
9 - Contact us
0 - Access key details

Access keys work slightly differently depending on the browser and type of computer you are using. To summarise:

Alternative text

All images on this site are accompanied by a brief alternative text which describes the image or its function as appropriate. This alternative text (alt-text) is generally visible only when the browser's automatic image loading feature is turned off.

Links

All text links are written so that they make sense when read out of context.

Links to external sites open in a new browser window.

Documents

Links to documents open in a new browser window.

PDF files can be read using Adobe Reader software, which is available for many different computer systems including Windows, Macintosh, Linux and Palm. To find out about accessible pdfs visit Access Adobe (new window) . For more help with Acrobat files generally and a link to download Acrobat Reader visit the Adobe site (new window) .

Text size

The text on this website has been styled using a non-fixed value in a style sheet. This means that users can easily change the text size using their browser settings.
