Safeguarding identity

The Identity and Passport Service has an important role in the multi-agency approach to reducing identity crime and developing a process for identity repair.  However, we are also leading initiatives to better safeguard identity information that is held by Government departments.

Recognising the huge value and importance of individuals' identity information and seeking to tackle variations in how that information is used across government is the focus of a new strategy that was launched on 23 June 2009. The strategy aims to deliver a common framework for the use and handling of individuals' identity information. Identity protection

The National Identity Service will prevent people registering their identities more than once. So, while the National Identity Service alone cannot prevent crime and terrorism, it can make it more difficult for criminals and terrorists to plan and carry out their activities.

Identity cards for foreign nationals ensure that those living, working and studying here legally are able easily to prove their identity. It also prevents those who are here illegally from accessing the benefits and privileges of living in the UK. The card will not be issued to tourists or visitors here for a short stay.

The National Identity Service will help employers find out about the immigration status of job applicants and about any visa restrictions that may mean they cannot work legally in the UK.

Looking after your interests

The Home Secretary has appointed an independent Identity Commissioner to look after your interests, scrutinising the way the National Identity Service is implemented and examining how identity cards are used by the public and private sectors.

IPS is facilitating a series of regional Public Panels, where IPS will listen to opinions, discuss ideas and seek to understand the real issues and concerns that the public wish to discuss. IPS is also setting up an Experts Group to provide independent expertise to inform the development of the NIS.

Visit the Identity Commissioner's website here.
