Equality and diversity

We are committed to promoting equality, fairness and respect amongst our customers, staff and partners.

Our mission is to safeguard the identity of everyone in the United Kingdom regardless of their race, religious belief and political opinion, gender, sexual orientation, disability or age.

Annual Employment Monitoring Report 2006-07

Our Annual Employment Monitoring Report for the period 2006-07 shows statistical information about the composition of the Identity and Passport Service in terms of gender, ethnicity, disability, age and working patterns broken down by grade as well as providing an analysis of HR processes such as recruitment, progression, appraisal, training and retention.

The report shows:

  • representation of disabled staff in the senior grades has increased
  • more women work in senior management grades
  • flexible working policies are improving the working environment
  • we have a higher percentage of trained Black, Mixed race and Ethnic staff compared to previous year.

There are many indications that IPS is continuing to make good progress on its five year strategy of employing a diverse and representative workforce.

Race, Disability and Gender Equality Scheme

Our 'Race, Disability and Gender Equality Scheme' aims to show what we are doing to promote equality in our work and how we will eliminate potential discrimination in our services and employment practices.

The scheme:

  • introduces the work we have undertaken which acts as foundations for the Race, Disability and Gender Equality Scheme
  • how we involve people with a disability in the Scheme and partnership work, and how we have gathered our information
  • what we are doing to impact assess our policies and processes
  • outlines our action plans and race, disability and gender equality objectives

About the scheme

Our 'Race, Disability and Gender Equality scheme' outlines our plans to meet the statutory general and specific duties under the Equality Act of 2006, which require us to take steps to promote equal opportunities for men and women. This is in addition to our existing requirements under the Race Relations (Amendment) Act 2000 and the Disability Discrimination Act 2005.
Our scheme for gender equality joins our existing Race Equality Scheme and Disability Equality Scheme in this one document, under the Home Office overarching Race, Disability and Gender Equality Scheme.
