In 1961, the British Visitor’s Passport (BVP) was introduced. It was suitable for travel to most Western European countries and was seen as a cheap and easy alternative to a full passport.
You could get a BVP from Crown Post Offices, which most people found easier than applying to the Passport Office.
BVPs were stopped in 1995 because they did not meet modern security standards and did not confirm the holder’s national identity.
