You can get a free extension to 10 years from the original date of issue if you hold a five-year child passport issued on or before 26 March 1998, and your details (for example, your name) have not changed. If you have already had this free extension, you should now apply for a renewal passport.
You can also apply for an extension if you hold a restricted validity passport (one year or less). Please phone the 24-hour Passport Adviceline 0870 521 0410 (see terms and conditions) for more information. The premium (one-day) service is not available for passport extensions.
