Durham train station is on a very steep hill overlooking the city.
The office is a five-minute walk away. Exit the station via the
main city centre route (platform 1 side of the station - southbound)
and go down the hill. On your left-hand side are many steep steps
to the city centre running alongside a terrace of houses. Go down
the steps until you reach the main road and Millburngate roundabout.
Using the light-controlled crossing, go straight across the road.
You will see the Passport office in front of you with The Gates
(formerly Milburngate) shopping centre to your right. Once
over the road carry on as if going across Millburngate bridge (Leazes
Road) and immediately on your left are steps that will take you
to the public and staff entrance. If you start to cross the
River Wear you have missed the steps to the entrance.
Due to the location of the railway station people with mobility problems are
advised to make the two-minute car journey to the office by hailing a taxi from
the rank at the station.
By bus
Durham bus station has both local and national bus services. The
station on North Road is a five-minute walk from the Passport office.
Exit the bus station and turn right. Walk along North Road until
you come to The Gates (formerly Milburngate) shopping centre. Go
into the centre to Waitrose supermarket where you will see a lift
for car park access. Near the lift there is a ramp, go down this
ramp and turn right at the first car park ticket machine that will
take you to level 4 of The Riverside car park. In the far corner
on your left is an exit door. Go through this, turn left and left
again to reach to reach another ramp that leads to the public and
staff entrance.
Alternatively if the shopping centre is closed turn left at the entrance to the
centre and walk along the perimeter. Cross the road, still keeping to the perimeter
of the centre until you reach Millburngate roundabout and bridge. Keep to the
right and take the steps on your right-hand side and then further steps again
on your right. The office is well signposted from here.
