How do I cancel a deceased person's passport?

A passport belonging to a deceased person should be returned to the nearest British passport issuing authority. In the United Kingdom the passport should be returned to any regional passport office (see Regional Offices for locations).

If overseas, the passport should be returned to the nearest British Embassy, High Commission or Consulate.

If the passport is lost or unavailable, it is your responsibility to advise Identity and Passport Service accordingly. You should do this by sending us a Lost and Stolen form (LS01) (pdf 55kb, new window) and provide an issued copy of the death certificate.

Depending on your wishes, the passport can be cancelled and returned to you or alternatively we will dispose of it on your behalf.
