What documents do I need to apply for a passport?

The following documents are required for first-time applications or replacement passports:

Birth certificate (a full birth certificate is required from all first-time applicants born on or after 1 January 1983)
Adoption certificate
Marriage certificate or evidence of change of name
Certificate of Registration or Naturalisation (if you acquired British Nationality by registration or naturalisation) along with the passport on which you entered the UK
Acceptable countersignatory with a properly certified photograph

To renew your passport, extend it or change your name, you need to submit the following:

Current or expired passport
Evidence of name change (e.g. marriage certificate, divorce document, birth certificate, adoption certificate, deed poll, statutory declaration) where applicable

We cannot accept certified copies or photocopies of documents.

Please note: birth certificates are not conclusive proof of identity, and we may therefore ask you to provide additional evidence to establish your identity. E.g. a driving licence, medical card, National Insurance card or benefit book.
